Default BMEFA Season 3 - Opening Day!

Off and running in Baltimore for a third season, with 9 games played today and 11 of the 14 coaches in action ...

MORNING KICKOFFS

DALLAS 28, BUFFALO 7
* Cowboys (1-0); Bills (0-1)
* The defending league champions blasted through the pageantry of Opening Day, throwing for four touchdowns to four different receivers in a season-opening victory. The Cowboy quarterback was 5-for-6 for 182 yards. Buffalo scored on an 88-yard pass. #77 for Dallas had 5 tackles, 4 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

DETROIT 19, HOUSTON 0
* Lions (1-0); Texans (0-1)
* Coach Ross left no doubt that his Lions will need to be dealt with, posting a first-game shutout that included three sacks. Detroit scored on plays of 47, 58, and 60 yards. The game marked the league debut for Texans coach Larry Sharpe.

OAKLAND 14, NEW ORLEANS 7
* Raiders (1-0); Saints (0-1)
* Will Travers' Raiders survived a Reggie Bush kickoff return for a touchdown to win on the road, 14-7. Oakland was 7-for-14 through the air for 97 yards, while holding New Orleans to -13 yards of total offense.

CLEVELAND 6, BALTIMORE COLTS 0
* Browns (1-0); Colts (0-1)
* League rookie Brian King pulled an Appy State and knocked off league commissioner Smitty, 6-0, in the season opener for both teams. Cleveland intercepted a Bert Jones pass early in the third quarter, then scored on the next play on a 40-yard run. Baltimore got one last shot thanks to a pass interference penalty on the final play, but a stick pass for the end zone was missed, and the Browns have a win.

PITTSBURGH 13, CHICAGO 0
* Steelers (1-0); Bears (0-1)
* Not wanting to repeat last season's 0-4 start, coach Morgans' Steelers overcame a bit of a slow beginning to this one to win; getting a key turnover at the 4 to stop a Chicago drive, then got scores on a 19-yard run by Willie Parker and a 26-yard run by Disco Danny Krieder. Brett Keisel had 5 tackles for Pittsburgh. #77 ran for 40 yards for Chicago; who got 72 yards on the ground as a team.

AFTERNOON KICKOFFS

CHICAGO 2, BALTIMORE COLTS 0
* Bears (1-1); Colts (0-2)
* Jimmie Elliott's Chicago Bears got a safety and made it stand, notching their first win of the season by upsetting the Colts. The game, shortened by time constraints, featured 21 yards of total offense, as the stout Chicago defense held Baltimore to -6.

OAKLAND 10, CLEVELAND 0
* Raiders (2-0); Browns (1-1)
* Another good effort from King's Browns, but the Raiders had too many weapons in a 10-0 win. Oakland held Cleveland to 18 yards of total offense, while throwing for a 32-yard touchdown to Jack Tatum to get the game-winning score.

PITTSBURGH 20, NEW ORLEANS 8
* Steelers (2-0); Saints (0-2)
* New Orleans went 3-and-out to start the game, and didn't see the ball again until the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh scored on the last play of the first half - culminating a 14-play, 73-yard drive with a 4-yard pass to Bettis. Getting the ball to start the second half, the Steelers went 77 yards 10 plays before Krieder caught a 7-yard TD. The Saints scored on a McAllister catch after a 94-yard kickoff return. Roethlisberger was 9-of-10 for 89 yards. Offensive plays run - Pittsburgh 28, New Orleans 4.

HOUSTON 6, PHILADELPHIA 0
* Texans (1-1); Eagles (0-1)
* Coach Sharpe gets his first win thanks to a 56-yard touchdown pass to #80, part of an 11-for-14, 157-yard passing day. The Eagles, led by noted passer Larry Fryer, hit all 6 of their passes but couldn't get down the field in chunks. Each team registered two sacks.

Standings and schedules in the next post.
