Why does 4.0 exist?

Does it exist so that more figure brands and bases can be allowed to play or does it exist more for performance reasons or does one naturally come hand in hand with the other?

What are your thoughts on this, as it was not too long ago and 4.0 was shunned by the masses, now it's seems to be catching on fire.

I get the feeling that from reading post after post that people are all mixed up in their opinions on this. There are still a die hard group of coaches who refuse to play at this weight.

Does this question make sense?
