Detail work.

When your painting and you are starting to detail you figures, what brush/tool do you use? When you paint a stripe or a number, what brush/tool do you use?
I am asking this because, I have tried using tooth picks, and my smallest brush and usually neither work unless I get lucky and the line comes out like I wanted it to.
