How would you go about shading, drybrushing, staining, highlighting a BLACK JERSEY and BLACK PANTS ? Would you undercoat it with grey ?

Where do you start when black will be the end result ?

those other guys might be able to help more than I can.
1. I paint anything that is going to end up black , black
2. dry brush grey highlights onto the black uniform
3. use black paint as a wash { watered down black paint } on the black jersey , this helps to even out the highlights for me.

Quite the same technic here. Depanding of the black tone you want finally, you can change the dark grey drybrush for a dark blue, or even a dark purple drybrush.

And finally, I make a washe with a ink based product (for washes, I prefer ink rather than diluted acrylic paint)


BTW, sometimes, mate acrylic black paints are almost "anthracit" or very dark greys, so you can directly paint it in black then shade it with a very deep black ink.

Althought the ink wash over a dark gray would work very well, I tend to paint the base coat black and then make the highlights a toned black, adding a touch of what ever color I want the light to be.

I usually paint them in with a 20/0 brush, especially on figures with alot of detail. I have found that a small amount of an orange/brown added to the black makes it look like sun is shinning on them, or a blue/gray for a cooler or neutral light. I just paint the tops of the shoulder pads and any wrinkles.

I am actually currently working on a team with black jerseys, and I will post a picture once I get one done.

Thanx for the responses. I will try the mehtods you have mentioned. A little experimenting this weekend to see what i come up with.

I would normally use black ink , I just thought I could save him some money . I have alot of inks and if you total up the price for each one it can get costly .

Speaking of inks, the "Vallejo Game color" ink range is very good and not too expensive. The CONS (wich can be an advantage too, BTW) is that you'll have to learn how to dilute it right for what you need. You can find a complete 8 bottles set for 15USD shipping included on ebay.

The ready to use Citadel (games workshop) washes (diluted inks) are very good too, but more expensive because they are already diluted. The price is quite the same than Vallejo, but the bottles are smaller and the products are more diluted, so you'll finish them faster. But it stills a really great product (especially the sepia wash, very all around use).
