I'm not sure what the actual size should be, but talking with Michigan Joe about this very subject, we have come to the conclusion that what ever size you choose, the length should be double the width, meaning that if the width you choose is 20", the length should be 40". But I really believe the optimum size is 48x24.

Default I agree...

...with RD on the optimum size. The one I built using Michigan Joe's instructions is 24x48. Any bigger would make it too unrealistic for play in my opinion, especially for the defense.

From a post by Jerry Mcghee
When I built my big field, I used 1/2" for 1 yard as I am 6' tall personally and just like the ones you have pictured above, I struggled with the scale to use. I originally figured the 1-1/4" figure you came up with, but instead, elected to round down to 1" = 6' which got me to the 1/2" = 1 yard. My big board rounds out nicely at 60" long end line to end line at the 1/2" = 1 yard scale. If I had used the 1-1/4" factor to a true scale, the yard equivelant would have equaled .683" = 1 yard, the board would have been a LOT bigger almost 80" end line to end line. And it was just a little bit more manageable to round down to 1" = 6' translating to 1 yard = 1/2" as it was easier to build and for those who've played on it...it's big enough.

I ran this scale argument in my head back and forth sideways and front, taking into account the average size of all current NFL quarterbacks (which averaged out to about 6'-2" or 6'-3" {I've lost my notes on it}) and then after racking my brain, I just decided to go with the height with the bases to come up with 1" = 6'. It made for rounder numbers and a nice scale to play the game on.

I don't know if this helps you or not, but that's what I came up with 10 years ago when I started designing my board.

GENTLMEN

I have read all of the comments on the size of the boaed for the MPFL system. I asked a family frien who is an artist and has scale for measuring. I gave him the measrments for the players, bases, boaed size from the 620 on up to the Jerry Mcghee size field and hear is what he stated.

That for the size figures, and field in relation to the actual measurments of the NFL size field the the Mcghee size field, and or a field cover that is 61X271/2 is the actual true scale to be on. Any thing that is under or over is NOT scale.

I'm sure that some may not like the fact, however the facts do not lie.

I personally feel that 5mm = ft is closer to actual scale, but if we are using American inches (for simplicity) than 1/2 = yard is good with me and acceptable. I have a McGhee field and going bigger than that seems to serve no purpose...it is (in the words of my kids) gia-normous already!
I do like this discussion...it is important that the hobby sets some scale as other hobbies have, model trains and wargaming for instance.

Default MY OBSERVATION

It is my observation over time that many who try to go larger than the afore stated measurments are actually looking for some type of advantage in the game. They can't see that they are hurting the game and in some cases hurting the hobby. ( My opinion )

I would invite you to visit my web page http://www.mpflfootball.com/teams/index.htm
click on any team link in blue and look at the stats, and compair them to actual real life football stats. Look at the balace between run and pass, the # of tackles, sacks, points for & points allowed. I tell you that because playing this system on an true scale boards gives you more than you could ever hope for, and nothing I have ever played on can compair to it.

If ,"IF" you want the true football experience nothing can compair to playing on an actual scale size board, NOTHING!

I want to say thank you to Mr Jerry Mcghee for comming up with this board, when I first saw it I knew I had to have one.
