Default training with complete O squad, step by step

Hi,

Tonight I continued my training, trying to learn the rules and basic strategies, and making vids of it for reference.

I made a little video of one of my achieved running plays ! I'll try to explain my process, comments are welcome, remember I'm a complete newbie (and, worst of all, a french newbie ) in base tweaking and playing.

The board is running at about 6/10 of speed, if I speed up the game I have difficulties to react on stoppage (reading pass opening, but faults and flags too) for now.

the position for players :
side space between players : 1 base width
lenght space between players : 2 yards
line of scrimmage : 2yards between O and D

the positionning sequence I use is (thanks to Al for the advises) :

1)offense setup
2)defense setup
3)offense pivots (except linemen)
4)play

the goal is to obtain a (quite) realistic defense action, to avoid too easy offense reading and force the defense to avoid stacking and piles.

The ball carier : half back (I hope it's the good name for him if not, the ball carrier is the running back the most far from LOS)

My idea when I mounted this play, was to use the full back to protect the HB run, hopping for a good hole made by the right tackle.

the tight end was placed to fake a passing play, as the wide receivers too. Remember the O squad make the last pivot on positionning, so this placements of receivers is especially bluffing to force the defense to spread.

then, the board is cut ON. Sadly, my right tackle is not enough powerfull to create the whole, but fortunatly, the HB came right into his back to add some strenght and push the defense guard.

The fullback is making his job, pushing the right defender (even if the defender was not so dangerous...but it make the play good looking). After seeing the video, I realized that I could use the full back to help on the push on the guards, making the run safer.

With a little luck help, the HB finally liberates himself from the rush and go (quite fast, I'm happy ) to touchdown, just near the sideline.

On side action, we can see the receivers (WRs and TE) are decent runners too, making straight and quite fast runs.

If the coaches had told the video referee , the play could be flagged I think. The D guard base front slightly touch the base back of the HB during a short moment (I 've seen it in slow motion on the PC). But since the Defense coach didn't notice it....

Anyway...I guess you understood that I'm having a lot of fun, even playing alone for now !

Default Nice

Very good. The only thing I might add is to allow the defense to make a pivot(s) to match the offense to make it fair. In the end it's what ever is fun for you.

I'll test other positionning rules this week.

For now, I like this one because it forces the defense to anticipate the play and to make field coverage instead of stacking, and allows the offense to simulate fake play, in a sense. But I 'll test other ways, to see what I prefer and what I think it's the most balanced.

EDIT : one thing I can do perhaps is to allow only the free defense men (not the one aligned with offense men) to pivot...or add a rule to allow O tackle or O guard pivot too (to be able to make center dive plays), and to compensate this advantage, allow the same number of D pivots...

So many possibilities...THis game is great

thank you !

I love this game. Even in solitaire play/training, it is very interesting. My only fear in a league objective is to become too good

I explain : if I can't find new fanatics here (people ready to build or buy a board, to tweak, and train, train and train again), and I only play against casual coaches, I guess it will be impossible to make good games...it's why I look after solitaire rules and gaming....to keep the interest even alone.

Anyway, on the beginning, making "blind" tweaking, I was wondering myself how the coaches can progress wisely. Now I understand, making training games : when I work on my passing play, I directly see what I should do to make better WR...or what about making a base for sweep play...or make a stronger fullback with a round proline base to push defense...etc, etc...each piece of the puzzle takes it own place.

But I'm far to be a good coach for now, so let's having fun ! I can't wait to make my first game.

Default they will !

I'm training hard for that

Tonight I trained the defense play. I used the Packers' squad (I have to know my 2 demo teams) for that.

I tried a defense "blitz and coverage" strategy (please, don't laugh ). Since I play with "iron man" squads, I used my wide receiver for free safety, and running back at strong safety (middle field).

See how the free safety is running from right to left of the field, to cover any receiver jumping out of the blocks.

I placed one blizter/LB on the left field (on top of video screen), and two linebackers to block the tight end (bottom of video). The blitzer missed the sack for almost nothing. I completed with 2 cornerbacks, one of them (the man placed on top of the video screen) is in good way for sacking.

On the end of vid, the QB is sacked, even if I had time to try a pass play to the right WR (on top, yellow base). But the safety is faster than him, so the chances of complete the pass are not so good...

ANyway, defense play is as interesting as offense play...diferent and fun.

As soon as I 'll have a little money, I'll buy some rounded proline bases for my D squads and RB.

I tried dials turning too...especialy on RBs and linemen, the effects are....interesting, but quite unpredictable for now.

Well...did I say that I love this game ?

Dimitri (gameday is near!!!!)
