I think it's a matter of if you really want the competition. Personally I love competing win or lose because I think it improves whatever I'm doing, but I can certainly see solitaire being a good practice tool.

And lets face it. It's not always easy to get a game going with others if no one is close by.

It's a hobby. There is no wrong way to play. Just have some fun!

Default It's Pretty Obvious We Are...

at an Impasse Mr. National, but let's understand, you came at me - the solitaire coach.

Now for me, I have competed in leagues and have started leagues since I've been playing this game. I could be classified as "the kid who has all the marbles" but those marbles came as a tremendous investment. Chances are, I've given more to this game than 99.9% of the people who presently play this game, so I speak with great conviction and passion of my beliefs.

I think the solitaire coach and competition coach are no different. You're trying to make it seem like just because you play in a league, you're better than me??? It would be safe to say that some of the worst derilects are those who play in leagues. Some of the most unreliable coaches are those who play in leagues. Some of the biggest cheats are those who play in leagues. Some of the worst "slow to change for progress" coaches are in leagues.

And by that same token, some of the best people I have ever met are in leagues. Some of the most ethical people I know are in leagues. Some of the smartest people I know are in league. And some of my best friends in the game are in league.

You are no better than I! Your post wreaks of elitism? Do you not know they all look at us as idiots, as fools, as guys who have never grown up? Don't you know when they look at one guy playing someone else and the players run around in circles, that they think the same whether we play it in competition or in solitude?

I as a solitaire coach can make more progression in the hobby than your league or any league could make in 20 years!!! I've already done so. If your league or any league ever gets to play their games on the Internet, let it be understood that a "Solitaire Coach" introduced the game to the Internet!

I play the game for the fun, the competition, and the chance to discover new things. As my wife and I rode around today, on a Saturday, I remember 16 years of giving up my Saturday to guys who never supported my products or ideas but benefited from them and thought, "******** I feel good going it alone now". "I will never give to those again who don't support me", I thought to myself! But I never thought of it as "taking my ball home".

Yeah I like competition play because I like the intellectual stimulation but I prefer solitaire and the understanding that I can depend on myself to play my games on time and when I want to. At this time in my life, I have no time for unreliability, unethical behavior, lack of hospitality, and so many other things that go in when dealing with others. I soon as rather take my ball home and not deal with it.

These types of arguments are so like many other arguments I had in the past on many subjects. You may not realize it, but every day you get a day older, you are growing closer to playing alone or not at all. It's a natural progression when you do not feel much interest in hanging around others.

I was fortunate that I had the best of both worlds and trust me National, I am definitely finding I have more fun and can do what I want in a world of solitude.

Now Mozeek is my 'Boy and I know he's laughing all the way to the bank on this one! Don't read too much into his statements. He tells you he's beatin' that dead horse to stir the pot! I am not sure but he probably put the "popcorn" avatar up there too???

But again Corey, I could compete in any way, solitaire or competition league but I would be no better than anyone else in this game. I definitely would be respectful of those who play solitaire too because they add great contributions to the game just like league guys. I say this as a solitaire coach who take pride in all the things I have given to the game.

corey is just nervous of the solitaire movement because if we all switch to solitaire, who is gonna need a NATIONAL personality like him flying around to everywhere in the world.... he would be out his job in EF...

we can just do it ourself and save the headaches

How many of you have Ustream accounts. I joined the MFCA account to Reg's and Pirate Ricks crowd. Who else is out there?

I use justin TV because it's linux friendly (you can find easy linux wiki documentation about it) you can use external video input (VLC) wich gives you great, great results. I believe you can do the same with UStream, but with my linux computer, I didn't figure it out.

With ustream for mac or windows users, you can also use external programs (calle producer, I believe) wich can allow a better video broadcast than the regular online way.

For internet broadcast, for what I understand (I'm far from a specialist of these things), the best way is to use an external encoder (open source like VLC, or software like the one Ustream offers), and then inject the raw code the external encoder gave you into the broadcat network.

With my 20bucks 640x480 webcam, I was able to broadcast (testing) 480p video, 30fps, with only 3-4seconds delay (to a US server, it's really good) But I use external encoder. If I use the basic online tools (not matter the broadcast network) the quality decreases dramatically.

Just my two cents on the tech part of the thing.

Concerning the solitaire question, here in france it's simply the only way to play "seriously" for me. I see that the way Dre stated, I believe. For me it's an interactive gameday show, an incredible novel, a roleplaying game. It 's like being the puppet master. You create the rules, you create the figures and teams, and then you put life into it, and see what happens. Good enough for me.

Default Rick, trust me, I don't take...

it personal because I at the end of the day, I get to play the game as often as I like at any hour that I like.

I just have an issue when anyone try to make it sound like they are better than you because they don't do what you do. I think that's an elitist attitude that has no place in MF! The reason being is that it's like when one person of one culture try to denegrade someone of another culture to make themselves look better or feel better about themselves.

We are all "BUMS" in the eyes of "so-called" normal people. We all should grow up in the average person's eyes. There is a movement! Many of the the brightest minds are starting to gravitate towards solitaire. And you know, that's good for the game. These guys are FELLOWSHIPPING and are playing games. The solitaire coaches are showing more UNITY than most have in this hobby.

Remember, we've been disagreeing on a set of rules since I got on the chatboards back in 1995! And now, in the solitaire world, there's unity even in rules.

Pirate Rick, Corey and I are 'Boys! I think he should be in the MFCA Hall of Fame! I nominated him because of his contributions to the game. Corey is stirring up rhetoric, which only helps the solidarity of Solitaire Coaches! He's probably laughing at this post, or smiling, but him and I disagree on a few things but we always consult each other too.

I am not taking this personally but I am having fun with this!

Default The debate about Solitaire

Funny that we are debating solitaire this is just another way that folks can enjoy electric football!!Playing historic matchups dream matchups and using it for game simulation are just some of the benfits of this style.Coaches like the french man who dont go to the conventions or have another coach to play with. This is how he can enjoy our hobby!!16 years ago I suggested through my newsletter that we have a national organzation for eflers and we just argued!!Somebody else came alone with that same ideal and you look MFCA came about!! So when the somebody they like comes alone and says I like solitaire then it will be liked by some of these guys!!

These have indeed been interesting posts....There is A LOT of hypocracy in this hobby. As far as a solitaire "movement", solitaire has has been around for decades. No one invented it by putting it on the Internet. As a practical matter, EVERYTHING is on line now. Look how I-Tunes has changed the music industry, or how Facebook and Twitter have changed our society. So some form of EFL on line is just a natural progression. Nothing new here. If one person hadn't introduced an Internet format, someone esle would have.

Having played in both a league and solitaire I can see advantages and disadvantages to both. I honestly don't think that if ALL coaches played solitaire, even if each an Internet access, it would be of much value. I think the hobby's most redeeming value is the fellowship, and that's hard to experience over a computer screen. I miss just hanging out with men I call friends, but I don't miss a lot of the controversy, arguments, cheating, and child-like behavior that playing seems to bring out. Something about competition brings out the worst in people. But in a way some of the Trash talking a competition and yes, s&*#$ talking is what made it fun.

The way I see it, nothing worthwile comes easy; supporting a good league or even putting on a good tournament is hard. Every coach who participates has to decide for themselves wether or not its worth that sacrifice.

Clearly there is a place for both leagues and solitaire in our hobby.

BTW I too have a U-Stream account- The Spartan Network.
