1st and 10 for the Irish
1. The give is to Johnson. Stopped for a loss by Reggie White.
2. The Irish come out in the power I. They audible into a split backfield. Vols counter with Wilson going over to the left side.
Rice back to pass. Complete to Ricky Watters. The VOLS react with Carter and Grant in deep zones. The play is ran. Watters is chased down from behind with a gain 10 yards.
3. 1st and 10 for the Irish. Johnson in the 1 back. He shifts to the left side of the formation. The VOLS counter with Wilson going over to that side. Rice in the shotgun and back to pass. Jackie Walker on the blitz but Rice has a man open. Pass intended for Watters who had just broken coverage but because of the pressure, Rice had to deliver early.
4. Irish in the offset I. Handoff to Ricky Watters. Great block on Henderson by Tim Ryan, #52. Watter breaks free. The VOLS react after the 10 yard rule. Vols miss him and he runs down to the VOLS 48 for a first down!
5. Great run on that last play by Watters. I thought he was gone for a score.
6. Irish start off in the power I. Rice goes back in the shotgun formation. They audible into split back formation. VOLS counter with Wilson going out to cover.
7. Rice back to pass. Frank Jacobs wide open and the pass is complete. 45, 40, 35, 30, and down to the 28 yard line. That was a great throw and catch by Rice and Jacobs. It keeps the Irish drive going.
8. 1st and 10 for the Irish at the 21 yard line of the VOLS.
9. Irish’s Rice back to pass from the shotgun. Walker comes on a blitz. Derrick Brown slides off corner is wide open down the left side of the field.
10. Rice throws the ball—complete! Brown, 15, 10 5, touchdown Fighting Irish~
11. Extra point is good!

12. Kick-off to VOLS. Back deep is Willie Gault, the VOLS all-time kick returner who holds several NCAA kick-off returner records.
13. Gault takes the kick at his own 5. Gault goes right behind the wedge. Gault up to the 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, touchdown! The VOLS storm right back on the ensuing kick-off. The Vols set up a nice return. The Irish shook the box and it started the kik at the 5. Instead of the VOLS coming straight at the point of attack, they went back to form a wall. Gault released towards the right side of the field and the rest was history!
14. VOLS shake it up for the kick. Kick-off 4 seconds and endzone. Touchback on the play.
15. 1st and 10 for the Irish at their own 20. The snow is really coming down hard here in South Bend. Rice pitches the ball to Watters for a 3 yard gain. Stopped on the play by Dale Carter.
16. 2nd and 7 at the 23. Rice runs the option to the right. Tosses it to Watters. VOLS react on the play to the runner. He picks up 6 and runs out of bounds. This makes it 3rd and 1. Jerome Bettis checks into the ball game. Bettis was not on this 1988 National Championship team but we love Bettis so enough said.
17. Handoff to Bettis. A gain of 5 right up the gut. Stopped by Al Wilson. An injury on the play. The Box has spoken. Injury to the Irish running back, Ricky Watters. Out for 10 plays.
18. 1st and 10 for the Irish. Rice back to pass, sacked on the play by John Henderson. Henderson went around Andy Heck on the outside and made a beeline to Rice. Rice was not moving in the pocket. Loss on the play of 7.
19. 2nd down for the Irish. They’ve got to reach the VOLS 44. They are at the 27 yard line.
20. Rice sets up a screen pass. Heavy rush up the middle by Reggie White and the great Steve Kiner. Rice dumps it over their head. Carter comes up to make the hit after read and react. A pick up on the screen of 10 yards up to the 37. 3rd and about 7.
21. Rice back to pass. Jacobs slides off Walker and Rice delivers with a 10 yard pass for a first down. VOLS shake the box. Holding on the Irish. Nullifies the play and takes the ball back to the 27 for 3rd and forever!
22. Irish Rice back to pass. Sacked on the play by Jackie Wallace!
23. 10 yard loss! Irish shake the box for the punt. 45 yards. Back deep is Willie Gault. He already has returned one for a score.
24. One second rush. No block. Shake for the punt of 45. It’s snowing so the coverage will be difficult.
25. 3 seconds on the hangtime. Gault returns for 10 yards.
26. 1st and 10 for the VOLS at their own 38 yard line. VOLS come out in their pass-blocking line.

34. 1st and 10 for the Irish at their own 20. Handoff to Bettis. Around right end for an 8 yard run. Brought down by Fair after the reaction.
35. 2nd and 2. Inside handoff to Johnson. A gain of 4 for the first down at the 32.
36. Last play of the quarter. Rice back to pass. He’s looking at Ismail but overthrows him. Incomplete!

38. 2nd down. Irish ball. Stack receivers on the left. Handoff to Bettis. A gain of 6 yards. Stopped by Reggie White.
39. The Irish seem to be getting a push up the middle. Their players are in 3 pt-stances which plays to their strength of running the ball. So far, it has seem to work for them.
40. The toss to Bettis. Fumble on the play! Recovered by Wilson at the Irish 40 yard line.
41. The VOLS offense comes back onto the field. Martin, back to pass. 5 receiver set for this series. Irish take a time out. Just was not expecting that.
42. VOLS change their scheme again. Goes to the 1-back. Handoff to Lewis. A pick up of 5. Stopped on the play by Jeff Alm. 2nd and 5.
43. Vols Martin, back to pass. Price on a slant in front of Terrell for an 18 yard gain and a first down to the Irish 17.
44. Toss to Lewis. No gain. Stopped by Stams.
45. Witten goes wide right. Martin back to pass. He’s looking and complete to Witten down to the 7. 1st and goal for the VOLS. Stan Smagala made the tackle.

53. The Irish have it 2nd and 7 from the 36. Rice rolls left. Pass complete to Jacobs for 10 and another ND first down. Deon Grant on the tackle.
54. 1st and 10 for the Irish at the 46. Rice, play action to Bettis,. Ismail gets past Carter. Rice throws a 40 yarder on a rope! Caught by Ismail. He may go all the way! Touchdown, Irish! The kick is good! Irish 14 VOLS 10
55. 2:15 to play in the half.
56. Touchback to the VOLS.
57. 1st and 10 for the VOLS at their own 20. The toss is to Jamal Lewis. Great block by Galbreath. A pick up on the play of 22 yards.
58. 1st and 10 for the VOLS at the 42. Handoff to Lewis. No gain. Stopped by Dean Brown.
59. 2nd and 10. Handoff to Garner for 3. 3rd and 7 at the 45.
60. Martin back to pass. Witten on a crossing route for 15 yards and another VOLS first down. Stopped by Streeter.
61. 1st and 10 for the VOLS at Notre Dame’s 40 yard line. Handoff to Lewis. A pick up of 8 on the play. Dragged down by Zorich. 1:25 on the clock.

This is a tough one .. I will say that the lucky leprachauns will club smoky over the head with a shelaliegh and knock him out.
