"In 1962 the Steelers replaced the player's numbers (Chargers style) with the current logo. The Rooneys weren't sure how it would look on an all gold helmet. That season the team posted it's best record to date and qualified for the playoff bowl. The team wanted to do something special for making the playoff bowl for the first time and changed the color to black. It's stuck ever since. "
