Default The MPANMMEFSL Thread (The Nine Man League)

I thought I'd try doing like a few other solitaire players do and keep one thread going with updates on my league. I'm just getting rolling (played the first of three games yesterday) with week 5.

Here is how things look through week four:

WESTERN DIVISION
Camp 53 Shays 3-1
Northome Bears 2-2
Gratton Swamp Loggers 1-3

EASTERN DIVISION
Plum Creek Pioneers 3-1
Wildwood Woodsmen 2-2
Caldwell Busties 1-3

I'll post week five's first game summary soon.

Default Week 5 Game 1 Shays vs. Woodsment ‘A Comeback With Out the Extras’

Wildwood Woodsmen @ Camp 53 Shays
Week 5
‘A Comeback With Out the Extras’

The early stages of this contest had the makings of a one sided affair. With the Camp 53 Shays being guided by guest coach Owen the Woodsmen took the opening kick off and two plays later had a touchdown. Little did anyone know, the miss of the ensuing extra-point would be repeated and become the deciding factor in the game.

With Owen resigning his post as the Shay’s head man full solitaire play resumed midway through the opening quarter. The Shays’ first drive lasted just three plays ending when an errant throw by Sophomore QB Bill Thayer was picked off by the Woodsmen. Wildwood could not capitalize though. Their three and out ended the first quarter: Wildwood Woodsmen 6 Camp 53 Shays 0.

The second quarter was all Shays. Roy Eldred scored on a scamper of 57 yards and Thayer redeemed himself with by intercepting a Wildwood pass attempt late in the quarter. Two plays later Thayer decided to keep and run on an option pass. 42 yards later Thayer was in the end zone and the tables had turned. The half ended with the Shays dominating but the lead was just eight at 14 - 6.

The Shays continued to steam roll the Woodsmen in the third quarter. Thayer caped the second half’s opening drive with a TD run of 19 yards off of a beautiful draw play to make the score 21 – 6.

The Woodsmen came roaring back however on the strength of a pair of 59 yard TD runs. The rally fell short however as a failed two point conversion and another missed PAT kick left the Woodsmen 0 – 3 for PAT’s on the day.

The Shays were able to run the clock down and held the feisty Woodsmen on the last play to secure the win 21 – 18.

Thayer led the way for Shays all day with 74 yards rushing on 9 attempts for 2 touchdowns. He was also 4 of 5 passing for 57 yards and he threw one interception. Thayer also contributed on defense with two assists, one for a loss, and an interception.

Woodsman running back, # 33*, was also impressive getting 150 yards and 2 touch downs off five carries. He also had one catch for a third TD and had a game high four tackles. One can’t help but wonder what may have happened had he not missed nine plays in the second/third quarters due to inury.

The Shays now have a league leading 4-1 record while the Woodsmen fall to 2-3.

Default Shaiesta! I can't get.........

a game to save arse! With five kids, two in basketball and one in hockey, chores at home, Super Bowl parties, and honey do lists it just aint happing in February so far.

I finally started another game last night though.

After one quarter the Swamp Loggers from Grattan have a 6 - 0 lead on the Bears from Northome on a 100 yard punt return. The Bears should be dominating this game with their speed. The Swamp Loggers had a deep drive thwarted when that speed picked off a short pass or the lead may be larger. The Bears' offensive and defensive lines are getting man handled. They'll need to make some adjustments.

Stay tuned................but I have board meeting tomorrow night and Al's fantasy draft Thursday night so................tune in Friday; I hope

Default Cool!

I didn't think anyone here would know what a shay was. Camp 53 was a real logging camp where shays were used. It's quite a story actually. All my teams in this league are historically based right near where I live.

My boys and father-in-law love model trains as well.

You do logo work, right. At some point I'll be looking for logos for the teams in this solitiare league. Do me up a shay if you like.

My other teams are the Swamp Loggers, Bears, Woodsmen, Busties (bet you don't know what that one is....) and Pioneers. I have logos I like for the Bears and Pioneers. I'll post them up some day as I get more organized.

Thanks for checking out my thread.

Default Week 5 Game 2 'A speedy comeback'

I got that game I couldn't get to completed tonight.

The Northome Bears staged a come from behind win over the Grattan Swamp Loggers. After trailing 13-3 at the half the Bear defense pitched a second half shutout and the offense did just enough to get the win 16-13.

It's late so I'll do a complete write up with pictures tomorrow.

Default Week 5 Game 2 'A Speedy Comback'

Grattan Swamp Loggers @ Norhtome Bears
Week 5
‘A Speedy Comeback’

After dropping two straight games the Bears from Northome came into week five needing a big game to keep pace in the Western Division. After a very good pre-game practice (tweak session) the Bears pushed the scout team all over the practice field and looked to be playing with amazing speed. All indications were that the Western Division cellar dwellers, the Grattan Swamp Loggers, would have a long afternoon when they visited Northome.

Grattan took the opening kick-off and after a couple of penalties were exchanged they surprised the Bears’ front four, pushing them back at will. A four play drive, highlighted by a forty yard pass from QB William Powers to TE Alfred Pierson that pushed the Swamp Loggers deep into Bear territory, was suddenly halted when the Bears’ speed showed up. # 28, J.D.Beach, intercepted a Power’s pass and returned it thirty-eight yards to set the Bears up nicely.

Grattan had other ideas though. The Swamp Logger defensive line pushed the Bears into their own backfield on three consecutive snaps. The Bears were forced to punt. The 46 yard punt settled into the arms of return man Joseph Eckinrode and would not settle again for a full 100 yards when Eckinrode crossed to goal line; untouched! The extra point was missed: 6-0 Swamp Loggers.

The Bears came back with a five play, fifty-nine yard drive that stalled when the dominate Swamp Logger defensive lineman Olaf Holm nailed running back Alfred Slocum in the backfield on a third down and one. The Bears converted a field goal: 6 – 3.

Before the half ended the Swamp Loggers would respond with a nice drive of their own. Six plays and 76 yards got them to the end zone. The drive was powered on the legs of Powers and fullback Charles Schroeder who had gains of 31 and 26 yards on the ground. The TD came on a Powers’ 28 yard pass to SE, # 18, Anton Sterle. This time Powers’ PAT kick was good and the Swamp Loggers took a 13-3 lead into the half.

The Bears didn’t exactly control the second half, but they got a pair of touchdown passes from QB M. Bergstrom. In the third quarter he found TE, C.S. Chapman for a 25 yard score, and in the final quarter, the Bears took the lead for the first time in the game when Bergstrom hit Beach out of the backfield for an eleven yard score.

The Swamp Loggers’ one third quarter possession was an uneventful, five play affair that ended in a punt. After the Bears’ go ahead score the Grattan boys did not give up though. They mounted a five play 62 yard drive that ended as time expired. With the ball first and ten on the Bear forty-six yard line and time for just one more snap the Swamp Loggers elected to go for the win. A game tying field goal attempt would have been a near impossible sixty-three yarder. On the final snap Powers found TE Charles Cross over the middle for 25 yards to the Bear 21. Cross had just one man to beat but the player of the game, Alfred Slocum, made an amazing open field tackle, his sixth of the game, and stripped the ball. Game over!

Final score: Northome 16 Grattan 13. In the end it was The Bears’ speed that made the difference but the Swamp Loggers, now 1-4 proved they are not to be taken lightly down the stretch. The Bears now 3-2, trail the Shays by one game in the West. Next week the Bears travel to Wildwood and the Swamp Loggers host the Eastern Division leading Plum Creek Pioneers.

Default Gearing up for Caldwell @ Plum Creek

I'm going to try and get Plum Creeks pre-game practice (tweak) in tonight.

Before each game I work the home teams bases to get them ready. I allow three minutes worth of tweaking on each base and one base can get an unlimited amount of tweaking (practice).

Once the bases are tweaked up I test them for speed and strength to see if I'm getting any better at tweaking. These test results are recorded and will be used along with season stats when selecting All-Star teams at the end of the season.

After tweaking and testing the home team also has a short scrimmage against the BYU Cougars during wich they work on their plays and game plan for the upcoming opponent.

In the final game of MPANMMEFSL's week five schedule Caldwell visits Plum Creek.

The Plum Creek Pioneers, the surprise team so far, coming off an upset win over the Northome Bears in week 4, are 3-1 and leading the Eastern Division.

The Caldwell Busties, underachieving so far, have dropped three straight after they appeared to be the team to beat with a week one win over the powerful Shays from Camp 53.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict both these squads start to live up to their pre-season expectations; Busties 32 Pioneers 14.

Stay tuned.

Great write ups and games. I like the Busties, just ask my wife.
I gotta ask, how do you get the summeries so nice and straight? Every time I try and do that, the site ignores my 'spaces' and crams everything together. I have to add a bunch of periods ........ to get the stuff readable.
