Passing Idea - Thoughts/Reactions

I like the TTQB because it forces the coach to learn to pass well and I also like the passing sticks because it brings the defense more into play. Great passers can hit an 80-95% clip which makes it extremely tough to stop an offense.

I thought, if I had another tourney, that I'd try something like this to give the defense a bit more of a chance and increase the sweaty palms of the passer:

- TTQB passing allowed. Runner down after completion (similar to Buzzfest). However, any unengaged defender within a certain distance (let's say a blue stick) of the receiver may be lifted and placed anywhere behind the front of the base of the receiver.

This would allow for guys who are close to covering the receiver to be brought more into the play and give the passer something to think about when it comes to INT's.

Thoughts?

Pass D

Tom: I like the way you think, you’re always bringing fresh ideas to the game. Placing your Chess Piece (D-Back) in the vicinity of the receiver, but behind, mimics the good closing speed found in most d-backs.
Pros: Makes the offense think about throwing into traffic, brings more realism, potential for turnover.
Cons: Adds another element of time to each passing play for defensive decision making and the placement of players (limit 2).

This concept would work well in a “Front of the Base” tackling rule-set with no sticks at all, where the running game could be on par with the passing game. Thanks, Ray F.

I like the idea that you have. However the most important thing to keep in mind that there must be balanced.

No one should have an advantage over the other because of the type of pass is done.

If a pass is done, all players need to have a right to, catch the ball. If that right is taken away you give an advantage to the offense, and hender the defense.

Hope this helps. :)

Test it out to see if what you do has an effect on other areas of you're game play.

Don't rush it !!!!!!!! Take you're time and good luck !!!!!

Tom,

That's an interesting idea. I hear you about guys that can hit in the 80-95%. What I would like to see is a pass clock. You could use a darkroom timer set to 4 seconds. The board goes on, the offensive coach has less than 4 seconds to turn off the board and get a receiver free. Now if a receiver gets in the open, the coach has 5 seconds to pass. That pressure will help bring the completion ratios down and more realistic. Now if the play goes to 4 seconds and the darkroom timer turns off the board it's coverage sack. OK... so now how do I stop the mugging at the line of scrimmage? Just mandate that the CB's cannot have their arms extended past the front of the base.

Excellent Wally!

Now I like the way that YOU think. Actually, this is not the first time I've read about some of your ideas that I agree with 100%, but this is the first time I've decided ti chime-in.

Love the idea.

Passing Idea

I agree that a timer of X seconds to actually pass the ball would help make things more interesting.

I think most guys turn the switch off within 4 seconds so I'm not sure how much that would change things except if you have to select and point to your open receiver within X seconds (like High Voltage). Then combine the clock to throw.

I always see "liberty" taken with this as guys ask for clarifications "is he touching", etc.

One kudo to Adrian. He's not only the best passer I've seen, but a guy who will play so many different rule styles and sets and excel in all of them. He doesn't just rely on his awesome passing and one rule set...he'll figure out the best way to compete using whatever rule set is laid out.

Keep the ideas coming!

Coach K-LO 02-25-2008 09:34 AM

nice idea...

I like the concept of putting a defender who is within a certain area closer to the WR to help....

4 seconds is WAY TOO LONG for a play to develop. We (BEFL) play with a 3 second clock on every "pass" play. It works well for us. ......

WallyJ 02-26-2008 06:27 PM

K-Lo,

my answer to you 220... 221, what ever it takes :) I thought if I said 3 seconds I would get crusified. 3 is good number... I'd like to see the BEFL in action using this rule.

ALGEBRA and MF

I remember BOTH of my Algebra teachers saying "whatever you do to one side of the equation, you have to do to the other side" and that is necessary in MF as well.

I think there are many reasons some coaches are more proficient with the TTQB than others. Whether it be a 5-10yd dump to a RB out of the backfield (90% of the time!) or a 10yd or less pass to a WR along the sideline after he gets shoved back 10yds and releases - while the DB flies 20yds the wrong way!). These 2 scenarios make up those high completion averages.

Everybody has experimented with a 5yd cushion or a 10yd cushion, but you can still get picked apart by a short-range gunslinger when/if the WRs slip off.

How about we improve our pass rush? THAT would decrease those numbers wouldn't it? That's not the topic, so here's another suggestion - HYBRID PASSING.

Confession: I stole ideas from EVERYONE that has EVER played this game and I made my own way of passing! I don't seek fortune or fame and I willingly give it to the masses!!!!!!!!!!!! No patents pending! No copyrights! No claim to fame! IF you like it, USE it. IF you don't, you're an MFer. :rtfl: Miniature Footballer that is! This is a kids' show.
  • Offense set.
  • Defense set.
  • "Snap" the ball: quick on and off so that EVERYONE on the LOS engages one another.
  • DBs release their WRs, either inside or outside, based on the bump at the LOS. We allow the DB to spin all the way around so that his FOB is still at the point of contact and slide him to either side of the WR so that he essentially is running side-by-side with him.
  • Now the QB decides how long of a route his WR is going to run by placing a Ref down the sideline at a set yardage i.e. T.O. can get 15yds downfield before Romo gets sacked. This forces Romo to sit in the pocket or rollout until T.O. goes 15yds and not just until a defender gets close and turn it off.
  • If T.O. gets 15yds downfield and Romo didn't get sacked, the TTQB pass may be attempted.
  • Hopefully the DBs (CB and S) are in position to make Romo throw a precision pass i.e. Over/Under or Inside/Outside coverage.

Try this

Try this . . .

Use the passing sticks until the ball is caught, then set up the target, (or use the player), then use the TTQB. Talk about realism, wow! The defenders react with the sticks, yet the pass still has to be completed through the air.

JIMBO 02-26-2008 10:57 PM

Ok On Offense...

...NOT ok on Defense! The QB still ONLY stops right before he gets sacked! Ya gotta run the "assigned" play which calls for a predetermined number of steps that the QB has to take before he sets-up and then throws the ball. That amount of dropback is relative to the route/pattern the WRs are running ala "timing pattern!" There is NO timing in MF!!! EVERYBODY stops the board ONLY when the QB is about to be sacked. The equation must be balanced: If you give the Offense something, you have to give the Defense something!

BAXTER 02-27-2008 09:42 AM

Thanks Tom!

Tom,

The "is he touching thing" is what I refer to as being an old veteran move. One way to avoid or reduce this craftiness is to allot a coach a certain period of time to finish the play once the board is turned on or has stopped (whatever time frame that might be). If a coach decides to ask various questions during the allotted time period, that's his prerogative. The more questions he asks, the less time he has to complete the play.

After re-reading, I am not sure on the coverage sack thing. I agree w/some in that the defense has to earn their sacks. Maybe allow coverage sack if no receiver has gotten past 5 or 10 pass the LOS. I say this because, the O should not be penalized by a coverage sack if a defensive player is holding a receiver 5, 10 or more yards down the field. Just does not seem to be fair to me.

Tomkat:
As simple as your idea sounds, I like it allot. Remove the target from the equation and just use the player. Sounds great! Also maybe include a time limit once the board is first turned on as stated earlier such as 4,5,6 seconds or so. Another 10 seconds or so to lay the stick and magnetic ball down and another 10 seconds or so to get the TTQB pass off once the TTQB touches the board. Or, Like in the DIXIE League, each passing play is allotted a total of X seconds for a coach to complete a pass. So, give a coach 20, 30 or 40 seconds to complete a passing play starting once the board is turned on or once the board is turned off. This will cut down on the micromanagement of each step involved is the passing process.

Sounds interesting fellas!

All are good..

And to follow what AB was saying allot the time, but also if the defense is up field past the QB in the X time he should be able to be pivoted the defense towards the QB for a sack. Coverage sacks are okay, but both sides need to earn their merits. That's why we spend time tweaking OLB (loopers) to make that coach turn the board off in X amount of seconds. All in all it should be the choice to continue to rush or drop for the pass, neither should be eliminated. And as far as "mugging" of the Wr's; I say in the first burst (snap) you bump then release make the defense play D and the offense make a play. Just my take.thmbsp$ thmbsp$
