Question DFW and all ShootOut System Styled Leagues

A coach has the ball, no timeouts for either coach remaining. The winning coach has the ball with 50 seconds left on the clock, what must he do to run the clock down or(take a knee) to end the game? At what point does the game clock stop or continue to run? Center down? Start of play?

With 50 seconds left you have to run atleast 1 play because remember you have 35 seconds for offense and then another 10 sec for defense

We covered this last night.

You should have just run two running plays. After that Joe would have had no timeouts remaining and could not have stopped the clock.

Factor missing.

What down is it ? Where is the ball ?

Default Growing Pains For Everyone

A coach has the ball, no timeouts for either coach remaining. The winning coach has the ball with 50 seconds left on the clock, what must he do to run the clock down or(take a knee) to end the game?

At the end of each play, in the last 2 minutes of the game, the 35/45 second clocks start automatically plus game clock. If you are losing, you may want to hurry up and set up your players because at that point, the clock would automatically stop. The defensive team would still have it's 45 seconds to set up. At that point though, the offensive team can not make any adjustments and the play has to be ran as is. This simulates a offensive team getting to the ball and spiking it to save time.

But if you are the team leading, you have the right to set your players up SLOWLY within the 35/45 second clock and just let the regulation clock run. Theoretically, you should be at 50-35 seconds when the play is ran. At this point, offensive coach designates who has the ball. Ball carrier runs the ball and tackled. If he is tackled out of bounds, the clock is automatically stopped. This would give you 15 seconds once the play is ran. It usually takes about 3-4 seconds on a running play. Stats are recorded and at that point, clock continues to run until it expires.

Always remember, "The Box" can be shaken by either defense or offense afger every play. That may be your only hope of getting a turnover at that point.

In the last 2 minutes, there is no wait on the center to be put down. This is the time of urgency and after the player is tackled, the 35/45 and game clock should start SIMULTANEOUSLY!

The only time a clock stops in the last 2 minutes is on an injury, penalty, fumble (change of possession), change of possession, challenged call, incompleted pass or ball carrier goes out of bounds.

This may need to be moved to the RULES section under Shootout Rules.

Reg

Default This is the only rule...

that I have problems with in our league. The TSO ruleset tries its best to mimic the NFL rules in as many ways. However, with this particular rule the winning team in situations such as this are forced to run plays until time expires. Several years ago (I think before I was born) this was also the case in the NFL. I believe the game was between the Eagles and Giants (I just saw this on this on ESPN a few weeks ago). I'm not sure what team was leading but they had the game won and all they had to do was run a few plays and the game was over. Well, they did but a fumble occurred and the other team ran the ball all the way back for a score. Hence, the birth of the "Victory formation". Now when teams have the game locked away, in efforts to avoid injury, running up the score and to secure the victory they line up in the "victory formation" and they just take a knee. To my knowledge, since this technique became a part of football no fumbles, interceptions or injuries have occurred during the victory formation unless the team lining up in the victory formation decides to do something tricky.

Teams in our league have lost games, chances at playoff spots and opportunities at playing in super bowls because they were forced to run plays instead of taking a knee and as a result lost a fumble to the other team and their opportunity because of this rule and I for one would like to see it changed!

Default Last night

What happened is that Coach Karim made an error in strategy and switch control. He decided to scramble and when he did - he let his QB go too far before curring off the switch. Thus he incurred a penalty - stopping the clock. Which - in essence gave Joe G. another stoppage.

As I stated above if he had just run the ball the first two plays he would have been fine and could have run the clock out.

Tight game with a lot on the line and sometimes - even with the big boys in the NFL - that can cause bad decisions.

Default 50 seconds remaining

The KEY is he had to run atleast one play......he had to get setup within the setup clock time and then say set and run atleast one play....a simple switch turn on and saying "I am taking a knee " before the snap of the ball would be needed and then the defense should have an oppurtunity to shake up the box...and then the clock runs out......but if something happens like a fumble penalty or whatever will be enforced.....why is there confusion.....this is easy...no rule changes need to be applied
