Mike, are you using enamels or acrylics? Personally, I'm an enamel guy and usually just use Testors gloss white or flat white. Also, are you a begining painter? I ask because if you're not an MFCA member, you should join so that you can get the Tweak. The next few issues will have articles for begining painters, along with some tips that will make your painted teams look better. Keep an eye peeled.

Going through same issues
Mike, I have always had great success using the enamel paints like Al said.I'm trying to go to the others,but I'm having a hard time with the white. I know enamel covers the best for me, but it is a little heavier.

Painting Figures
Mike,
I have been painting figures for at least the last ten years. My first atempts at painting was when I was twelve and I wish I had this forum to ask for advice back then. Unfortunately there weren't even computers back then. I used enamals for a long time but getting colors to match without mixing was always hard to find. I did like them better because usually was a one coat coverage and painting light colors over dark colors was easier. However I began using the acrylic craft paints last year for the availability of colors and a lot easier to clean brushes and a lot cheaper cost. My advice would be find what best works for you and perfect your craft by trying different techniques and go with what satifies you the most.

A white acrylic with pearlizer added to it. Both can be found at Michaels and major craft stores.
Gives a really nice white finish with a subtle sheen to it from the pearls.

My Preference Is...
...Delta Ceramcoat White. Michaels is my one-stop-shop! Oh yeah, I have a separate brush that is ONLY used for white; one for yellows and tans; one for blues and black; one for colors i.e. browns, reds and greens.

Mike,
I like to stick with the 'white" of the plastic figure instead of painting,that is when I can.No painting a white jersey or pants unless I'm "fixing" someone elses mistakes,such as where they send a figure already painted to various degrees. I call it saving their figures.It costs extra too......LOL When I have to do this I use Model Master -White Primer It works real well in my opinion.All the suggestions are good so you can't go wrong.As for using a sealer or clear-coat I recommend several : Brush-On Clear Coat/ Sealer- Delta Ceram Coat-Gloss or Flat Model Master -gloss/flat Both work well. Now for a very " cool" look,I Highly recommend Testors Dull-Cote spray.It is a flat.You can get it in gloss too. the Dull Cote will give you a sheen that you'll love.It looks great. especially when you go back and "gloss" the helmets.Great stuff. Available at most Hobby Shops/ Arts & Craft Stores. Jimbo, I've been painting along time in this hobby and I have to admit that your idea of using a different paint brush for certain colors is great.Bam! It never crossed my mind.It just makes sense.Say you finish painting red and go to white.Your brush isn't totally clean and BAM ! next thing you know you're painting something Pink.I've done it too many times.Never even thought about seperate brushes for the paints.I'll have to give it a try.Thanks for the tip.Seriously.
