Creating a Board Game
I'm creating a football board game similar to Ideal's All Pro Football made back
in the late 60's. The problem I run into is with the passing game. I want to account for underthrows, overthrows, drops, tips, passes behind the receiver, interceptions, interference, completions, bullet passes, and lob passes. I want it as real as possible but not so complicated or technical it's not fun. I am also shooting for a learning tool where people will actually see what goes on during plays understanding offensive and defensive strategy. This is a work in progress. I welcome all suggestions. |

Maybe take some clues from the old Sports Illustrated Football game, or Paydirt or even Strat-O-Matic.
Sports Illustrated Football from the '70s rules as far as top football boardgames goes. I do and did like the Ideal game as well. Keep us posted. I love football board games.

I can't say I remember All-Pro Football, but I do play Strat-O-Matic. I play in a retro league and I run another current season draft league. I've played SOM since 1970.
I guess I don't see the reason why you would want to worry about dropped passes, tips, etc. An incomplete pass is an incomplete pass in regards to stats. Seems that worrying about the other things would just make it more complicated which is what you are trying to avoid. |

I have played Statis-Pro football. It does have individual cards for offense and defense. I've wanted to get a face to face league going for that with a salary cap and draft but finding the people is tough to do.

My league games are played online. I do play solitaire when I'm bored. Strat is a great game, but in all honesty, I'm feeling that many games are won and lost on the luck of the rolls, and not necessarily on the coach's strategy. When it was C&D, you roll the dice, but even though there is a luck element, you feel that you have some control. In league games, the game engine generates the dice rolls, making you wonder about the randomness of the rolls. Not saying that the game seems "fixed" at times, but it does make you wonder when some rolls go against you even when you've made the correct calls and moves. |

I think I should have explained the concept of the game first.
It's playing MF where you move the players. Offense and defense set up in their formations on a checkerboard type field. The players move a certain number of squares based on a roll of a die. Ex: Center and guards move 2 - 4 squares, OT 3-4 squares, WR 5 - 7 squares Def: Ends 4 - 5 squares, tackles 3 - 4 squares, LB 4-5 Squares This may change while refining game. Dice will determine dominance on contact between players, broken tackles, fumbles, and injuries. I want a game where you have some command over the game. With passing how would you determine distance? I was looking at AB's MPFL passing it may work or a version of it. I want to take into consideration bullet passes, lob passes, bad passes, on target, thread the needle, completions and interceptions. I also want to intergrate a kicker that actually kicks, that may be the answer a qb that throws the ball. |
