Barry Sanders was the greatest running back in the history of the game.

Amazing- His elusiveness and highlight runs were second to none!

He had NO offensive line- He did most of his running having to go backwards before going forward! Can you imagine if his line had been the Dallas Cowboys line back then? Wow.

Class- On the field and off, he was Class. However, the ultimate show of class was stopping before he shattered the NFL rushing marks. He could have set a rushing mark that would never be touched, but in Barry fashion....he walked away.

My 10 year old son summed it up best when we were in a sports shop recently. "Dad, if Barry Sanders retired years ago, why do all the Detroit jersey's still say "Sanders" on the back?"

Where is Billy Sims???

to hate? Billy was one of those. It's a shame I could not put him on this list but I want to! Billy just did not play long enough and his career was cut short. I know the Gale Sayers argument and Billy was just as impressive.

I was fortunate to grow up in the Billy Sims era and loved his reckless abandoned running style. The only one I could see replacing him with is Ottis Anderson. When OJ Anderson was young, he was the BOMB! He was fast, had the hips, and could flat run over you.

Joe Perry and Lenny More were similar but Joe "The Jet" as better and that's saying something. He did not get all the pub he should have out west with SF 49ers but he was one heckuva runner.

Another not mentioned on here was Wille Galimore and Hug McElhenney. These guys were something special. Galimore was Sayers before Sayers was. But yes, the Hooks, Texas product Billy Sims was as good as they came but playing in Detroit hurt him and the fact that he got injured and it shortened a brilliant carreer. I know, see Bo Jackson too.

however Brandon is playing against guys who are much stronger and faster then Jim ever played against. I think if Jim was playing today he would be as effective as if he was playing today. He was the biggest guy on the field at times and nobody wanted to hit him juts like Jacobs. However 80% of the league would love to tattoo BJ.

As far as comparing backs from different generations, I understand the argument that guys now are much bigger, stronger, etc. because of weight and strength training methods and supplements. However, that isn't really fair to the old heads. Jim Brown would still be one scary dude now if he had access to the things we have now. I think you can only judge by how dominant a guy is in his era.
