Default IN PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS " PLS READ "

COACHES,

Your players must pursue, to make you happy. I've been reading what some alltime coaches ( college and pro) have said, " If he can't pursue, he can't play for you ! I just happen to come accross a football book that had some drills in it. (no name of the book neccesary). What one paticular tean do is have lenghty pratices on pursuit. Just the wrong angle will result in a missed tackle and a possible score. Ant told me he has seen some coaches angle the guy the wrong way and the offensive player escaped. THE BOOK SAY'S

1) you must know how fast a paticular defensive player is

2) you must know how fast your team is as a defense.

This team sets up A LINE of cones just outside the out of bounds line. Anywhere from the 50 yd line to the endzone. They have there fastest offensive player whether it is a wr, or rb take off at full speed down the sidfeline. They set there defense up in various sets they would use in a game. The premise is this offensve player caught a pass or broke free on a run and took off down the side line at full speed trying to score. They direct all the defensive personel towards the cones to see the angles they take in either, TRYING TO CATCH UP WITH THIS RUNNER, OR HEAD HIM OFF AT THE PAST trying to give up as minimal yards as possible. I think they just tag the runner as they enter through the two cones they have chosen.

Linebackes must turn and chase, will safties and some db's must head him off at the past. IT IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY COOL DRILL. Doc smeby once said to place your db's against the side wall of the field and turn the board on. If he run's straight he is a keeper. If he veers off the wall at some point HE CANNOT PLAY DEFENSIVE BACK !

A way to simulate this is to make two tracks. two long pieces of wood (like pass simulation sticks) with amgnets underneath just to hold down the sticks.
Wide enough so the base can run freely/straight down the tracks. I have these bright orange caps i use as cones. Got them from a store in my area. Maybe 30 caps for a $1. BEFORE THE BOARD IS TURNED ON, WHEREVER THE PLAYER IS WAITNG TO RUN SIMULATES WHERE HE CAUGHT THE BALL OR BROKE FREE ON A RUN DOWN THE SIDELINE. Angle all of your defensive players NOT WHERE HE IS, WHERE YOU THINK HE WILL END UP AS YOUR DEFENSIVE PLAYERS LOWER THE BOOM.

You can tell where your players hit the side of the track whether or not they got there too fast only to go out of bounds and the runner goes by for a td. Or he got there two slow on a bad angle and the runner is already gone.

You can move the track in the middle of the field and check your pursuit from both sides of the tracks. You have a keeper if a defender enters the right two cones to make a tackle at least 75% or 80%. If your defensders veer off in pursuit and don't even touch the tracks period, THEN " UT O "

FIGURE OUT A WAY TO SIT THE CONES ALONG THE TRACK ON THE TOP. GLE, MAGNETS, GLU TAK WHATEVER. If you feel you need to mark where the defender is hitting the track to keep record. that may help alot

thanx

Default Your worth to the defense can be (Read On)

measured by your distance from the ballcarrier at the end of each play.Great point Dre'.Even more important in a system that uses big/scale boards. That is why I think it is so important to place speed on the defense.Your TNT's can be bricks to move, but you better be able to run/pursue with the rest. With stoppages you can avoid blocks and I bet if you test it,lighter faster bases stay unengaged easier to get more pursuit.Another rule of pursuit,Never follow the same color jersey(meaning your teammate). Also make sure your backside player responsible for reverse/bootleg/counter stays home until the ball crosses the LOS.You can keep him on a magnet if need be.Great post Dre'.At the HS level where I coach,we have a coach who his only job whether it be inside drill 7 on 7 is to to make sure the kids are flying to the ball.If they do not get there in a fast manner we up/down the whole defense to remind them.this habit we are trying to develop shows up on friday by punishing the ballcarrier and getting turnovers.Just like MF,if there is a fumble, you got better odds of recovering it."Pursuit of happiness"--T-shirt idea to me.Play Fasty--Fast and nasty--STT
