League Rival for NFL?

I just read an article from the New York times about and football league that will open in 2008. The UFL (United Football League) is set to rival the NFL directly. Mark Cuban is listed as one of the potential owners and teams are already planned for cities such as L.A., Las Vegas, and Mexico City. It sounds like a great idea to me but i hope it doesnt expand to fast like the USFL. Anyone else think will work?

You would think that people would have learned their lessons by now. If these guys have that much money to throw away, how about helping the homeless or the impoverished?

There's a number of pitfalls waiting this league outside of the Nfl.
1. All players need to have a 4yr degree. Most Nfl players don't or they get them later.

2. The teams need the ok from college's to use the stadiums.

3. T.V. No coverage deals as of yet just the internet.

4. $$$$$ The players are only making $100,000 per year. Not many will jump at that deal. Some but not much. Arena Football pays that much now but they have T.V. and sponsors.

To many pitfalls. I'd love for it to compete with Big Brother NFL, but it'll fade soon.

Why people keep trying to compete with the NFL is beyong me. A new league should start in May and end in August before the NFL season starts. I believe people are ready for year-round football but in the fall it is stricktly the NFL.

If you haven't GONE to an ARENA game - YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING!

The league was 15 years old before I stepped foot in Chicago's Allstate Arena and I WAS SHOCKED that I hadn't done so sooner. I'd seen games on TV, but compared to the real thing...FORGET ABOUT IT!!!

We have year-round football already: Sept-Feb is NFL; Mar-Aug is AFL; and NCAA runs Aug-Jan.

Good Luck, but I strongly doubt financial backers - other than Cuban - will want to waste their money like Trump and McMahon already have.

Ok, I know everybody has their views about this new proposed football league, but I for one would welcome an alternative to the No Fun League er, NFL.

Come on guys, the NFL has slowly been taking away football from the fans. First it was the multiple relocation of teams in the 90's, then ripping Monday Night Football off ABC, and on a smaller scale, ripping us from purchasing NFL teams from Miggle. The NFL is all about business - corporate business. I mean almost all the stadiums are named after a Corporate sponsor.

It's matter of time before the NFL puts the Super Bowl on pay-per-view and charges us "the fans" some $60 just to watch the big game. Oh, yeah the NFL is trying to trademark the slogan "The Big Game". Go figure!!

This new proposed football league has to have its main focus on giving back to the fans. The league should have reasonable prices for tickets & have accesibility to the players. It should be "A Fan's League".

To say that guys like Mark Cuban, who is really a successful businessman, is wasting money on this league is like saying that nobody should ever come up w/ new ideas for entertainment. Have you guys ever watched Mixed Martial Arts (aka Ultimate Fighting)? MMA as its known has taken off in this decade and now probably is as popular as boxing. The guys who created MMA probably had an idea it would be successful.

So if the UFL is marketed correctly, I can see it being successful. I don't know about the UFL going to a fall schedule against the NFL and college football. A spring schedule might work better. And sorry Arena football doesn't do it for me. It's too much like watching basketball players wearing helmets.

I hope nobody feels like I'm attacking anybody personally, but I am just exercising my first amendment rights. After all, we live in the "Land of the Free"

I love all kinds of football. College, NFL, Arena, heck I love going to watch my nephews play pee-wee. I would also like an alternative to the NFL but they will not be able to compete with them. I LOVE the idea of making it a fan friendly league. I watched the XFL all the time but the football was not very good. Alot of pennalties and missed field goals, passess ect... I did like the cameras being on the field and in the locker rooms though. Thought it was a great idea. If done properly and it does not play their games during the fall they may make it. If they do play during the fall how about games on Tuesday thru Friday nights. This way you don't compete against College or Pro. There are college games on Thursday nights but for the most part they are blowouts!

Ed #29 I'm like you; I would like another league to make the NFL sweat. I also watched the Xfl, USFL,, CFL, and any other FL you can think of just to watch Football! I hope it gets off the ground. Heck I wish NFL Europe played more games. The truth is we all want as much football as we can because "My" baseball team SUCKS (Orioles) and I can't sit through another 9 worthless innings.
