Former Redskins, Giants LB Arrington hurt in motorcycle crash

LANHAM, Md. (AP) -- Former Redskins and Giants linebacker LaVar Arrington was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries after his motorcycle crashed on a highway ramp, police said.

Arrington lost control and hit a guardrail, Maryland State Police Sgt. Russell Newell said.

Arrington, who turns 29 Wednesday, was wearing a helmet and alcohol was not involved in the accident, Newell said. Arrington was issued two citations -- one for operating the motorcycle without a proper license, and one for the crash itself.

Washington drafted Arrington No. 2 overall in 2000, and he made three Pro Bowl appearances while with the Redskins. But he injured his knee in 2004, his playing time decreased, and Arrington bought out his contract after the 2005 season.

He then joined the Giants but was injured in October and played only six games last season. New York released him in February.

Those who live in the MD area know that the motorcycle riders have gotten quite out of hand. Every weekend kids are dying in crashes. This accident happened out on Route 50 which runs from Ocean City up through Bowie and right through Washington, DC's New York Ave. A very busy and dangerous highway.

I saw Lavar last summer at H20 and gave him a pound for joining the Giants to which he smiled. Unfortunately, he only played about 7 or 8 games for the Big Blue. All of the Redskins fans here in MD, DC, and VA love LaVar.

Hope he recovers from his injuries and gets well soon.

...or should ALL Professional Athletes be placed in air-tight, danger-proof bubbles during the offseason? Sheeshhhh!!! Ya think they'd at least FORBID motorcycles! Not that Lavar has made much of an impact the last few years, but Big Ben's accident last year cost the STEELERS severely!

Like the rest of us I heard about the accident this afternoon. This is the third year in a row that a well known NFL player has been injured in an off season motorcycle accident. In 2005 it was Kellen Winslow II causing him to miss the the entire season, last year it was Big Ben of the Steelers and it really had an impact on his play, and this year LaVar Arrington. It would not surprise me if more GM's start putting clauses in players contracts regarding players riding motorcycles.

Motorcycles are extremely dangerous and seem to attract certain types of people. There is a guy I went to school with back in my PG days who had been injured on a motorcycle and is still confined to a wheel chair. I know another person who almost died on one and would have had he not had the good fortune of falling one block from a paramedic.

Take it easy this summer guys so you'll still be around by next summer. You can bet Lavar is seriously injured. It is hightly unlikely that a person will walk out of a motorcycle crash unharmed. NFL players who are worth so much money should be more careful not to risk life, limb, and career for the thrill of riding. As I said, everyone in DC loves Arrington and we do hope that he gets well soon.

How far away are we from seeing universal clauses in players' contracts forbidding them from engaging in 'extreme' activity? Such is the case in MLB, right?. With all the $$$ invested in these players you'd think coaches would be all over this stuff. I'm sure when Roethlisberger's contract redux comes up this will be made very clear.


Besides, isn't the thought of a 200+lb man stepping on your head a rush in itself?

Too bad. He was just geeting ready to sign a contract with the Baltimore Ravens. They were working out a deal after they sign Terrel Suggs to a long term contract. Him and Ray Lewis are close friends. Ray introduced him to the Raven's owner Steve B. ( not Art Modell ). Oh well! another opportunity blown!
