BREAKERS SHOCK COWBOYS 28-14 IN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP (photos and recap)
TODAY IN THE NJLMFL- WHERE THE LEGENDS PLAY
NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME DALLAS COWBOYS AT SAN JOSE BREAKERS RECAP- The San Jose Breakers became the first of the new expansion teams to reach the Super Bowl when they upset the Dallas Cowboys last night 28-14 to win the NFC Title and advance to Super Bowl 50 vs San Diego. Here’s how it all went down. San Jose KR Justin Forsett returned the opening kick to the Dallas 38 yard line and on their first play Breakers RB Michael Turner ran right and broke through the Dallas defense en route to a 38 yd TD run and San Jose was quickly out in front 7-0. The Cowboys went 3 and out in their first series and P Matt McBriar’s 58 yd punt went for a touchback. San Jose drove the ball to the Dallas 30 in 6 plays featuring a 28 yd pass from QB Danny White to WR Fred Barnett. The quarter ended there with the Breakers ahead 7-0. Opening the second quarter Danny White hit Barnett again to the Cowboys 7. The next play was a pass and White eluded the Dallas rush and scrambled in fior a 7 yd TD and a 14-0 San Jose lead with 10:40 to go until the half. Breaker kicker Roy Gerela sent the kickoff out of bounds and gave Dallas the ball at midfield. Roger Staubach who struggled all game threw 2 incomplete passes. At this time the broadcasters noted that there was 9:41 left in the first half and Emmitt Smith had not touched the ball yet. Well on 3rd and 10 Smith took a draw play and ran 16 yards for a first down at the San Jose 34. Dallas got as far as the Breakers 24 when Staubach missed a wide open Michael Irvin at the San Jose 10 at the 2:00 warning. Raphiel Septien came on to try a 41 yd FG. Setien’s kick was low and was blocked by Vonnie Holliday who picked it up and returned it to the Cowboys 35 with 1:48 left in the half. Turner ran for 8 yards to the Dallas 27 and after a short gain and a 5 yard penalty sent San Jose back to the Dallas 31 White threw a pass for WR Tony Hill but Everson Wallas picked off the pass at the Dallas 10 and was tackled at the 12. This was the only turnover of the game and kept San Jose from taking a huge lead. Staubach hit Tony Dorsett for 14 yards to the Dallas 26 and Dallas took a timeout with :41 seconds left. An incomplete pass took the clock down to 22 seconds. On second down Staubach hit Dorsett again on a safe short pass and with San Jose in a deep cover defense the hall of fame running back weaved in and out of Breaker defenders and broke clear for a 74 yard TD as time expired. Dallas was outplayed the entire half but only trailed 14-7 at the half. This was a big momentum shift in the game and the Cowboys were back in it. Second Half- The Cowboys got the second half kick and Deion Sanders returned it to the Dallas 45 but fumbled. Fortunatley the Cowboys recovered. The Cowboys fumbled 3 times in the game and recovered all 3. The Cowboys momentum fizzled out after Dorsett and Smith ran for 6 yards and Staubach threw incomplete again forcing the Cowboys to punt. The punt was another touchback. The Breakers went 3 and out and a poor punt set Dallas up at the San Jose 44.Landry then replaced Staubach with Troy Aikman who hit Michael Irvin on his first pass to the San Jose 35. Aikman then threw incomplete twice and it was 4th and 10. Innstead of trying a long field goal Dallas went for it on 4th down and Aikman again threw incomplete as the third quarter ended. The Cowboy quarterbacks were awful on this night. San Jose took over on downs and Dallas was held scoreless on two great opportunities. On first down Michael Turner made things worse for Dallas when he ran 57 yards to the Dallas 7. Three plays later White hit Barnett for a 7 yd TD and San Jose pulled ahead 21-7 with 10:04 left in the game. The Cowboys began at their own 35 and had their best drive of the game. Staubach was inserted back into the game and hit Emmitt Smith on 2 short passes then ran for 7 yards to the Dallas 46. On third and 4 Staubach hit Smith in the left flat and Emmitt Smith ran the ball to the San Jose 35 for a first down. Smith then had a highlight reel run when he started left and then cut back to the right and and darted 35 yards for a Dallas TD. This made it 21-14 but the long drive took about 7 minutes and there was just 3:48 left in the game. Forsett returned the kick for San Jose to their own 41. Turner gained 5 yards on first down and Dallas took their first time out with 2:55 left in the game. Michael Turner then locked up the MVP of the game with a 54 yard burst to the Dallas endzone with his teammates trailing him as San Jose pulled ahead 28-14 with just 2:29 left. The Cowboys got the ball at their own 42. Smith had another nice run of 17 yards to the Breakers 40 and after another Staubach incompletion there came the 2 minute warning. Staubach hit Irvin for 15 yards to the Breakers 25 and Dallas took another time out at the 1:26 mark. After two more incompletions Dallas figured they would run and Dorsett gained 5 yards to the San Jose 20 but it was 4th and 5. On 4th down Staubach was sacked for a 14 yard loss and San Jose took over on downs. Former Cowboy Robert Newhouse ran for 8 yards on the final play of the game to seal the upset. A jubilant Breaker team hoisted the games MVP Michael Turner up on their shoulders as a dejected and beaten Dallas Cowboy team departed from the field. Super Bowl 50 is now set. An all California Super Bowl between the Breakers and the San Diego Chargers to be played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Will destiny be on the Breakers side?
