Default You Make The Call

What do you do in a situation where there is a simultaneous catch, tackle and possible fumble? Here's the scenario.

Stick pass down the right sideline to Ocho Cinco. Chris "The Hitman" Harris (BEARS) hits Chad at the exact moment Chad touched the ball AND knocked Chad over on his arse!!!
  1. Would you call this a catch and possible fumble? SHAKE THE BOX!!!
  2. Or is it Incomplete because he didn't/couldn't make a "football move" after the catch?

Using basic Stickball knowledge, what would be the call? Place your vote above.

In MPFL we don't use the box, but a catch and hit is simultaneous possession and it goes as a catch for the offense. However, since your saying that the receiver was jarred and dislodged on impact, it's a big hit and an incomplete pass.

I don't want to mess up your poll so I won't vote but this is a good post.

Well... going by NHFL and Tornado Alley rules

It would be a catch.. cuz the receiver hit the target..
And.. a possible fumble.. (we don't shake a box.. it's a flip of the coin) because the defender knocked the player with the ball on his arse..

I only know a little in regards to the rules but I would say catch and possible fumble. In stick passing the catch is complete upon touching the magnet (no stipulation as far as I know for making a football move)- thus catch, knock down, shake the box for fumble.

Good post!

I agree with you on that, it would be incomplete. You have to account for this in the game, on this simultaneous play the WR was knocked back, this shows a very hard hit. It wouldn't be fair to award a completion or interception, so a incompltet pass is the right call.

I just hade this happen yesterday and it was clear to see it was an incompletion.

The BOX I think acts has the Official and as fate. However I would rather see the action take place on the field rather than in a box.

But if the Box fits into how you like to play then please enjoy it to the fullest. The Box is right for one culture, but bad for another culture.

Default 50 cents

Jimbo,
I gotta go with tradition here. The pass is complete and down at that spot. Good stop on the defense. However, this appears to be the perfect situation for, ....Reggie's Box?

Default Imo

1st, catch, 2nd hit, 3rd fumble, 4th flip a coin or shake the box, whichever rules you use.

Even if they both hit the ball at the same time, the receiver has the catch, if the receiver hits the ball and at the same time the defender hits him, thats a catch, and he falls, thats a fumble, 1. catch, 2. hit, 3. fumble, 4. shake or flip.

P.S. It depends on the wording in your rule set also, if it is a no catch, then your rules should read, if receiver hits target and at the same time the defender hits him and knocks him over, it's a no catch.

Default Thanks Guys!

I think by traditional stickball rules, or at least the ones we used in SWB I & II, it would be a catch, then tackle, then auto fumble because he fell(MWEFL). Had the FS hit him before he touched the ball, but within the "halo", I think that woulda been a break-up hit and no catch.

THANKS GUYS!

Default Catch

It is a catch without a doubt. Receiver is down as a result of the hit. The fact that he might have fumbled or he dropped the ball is all speculative. Unless there is a rule stating the receiver must remain upright/standing when catching the ball. And we all know there isn't! Shaking the box on the other hand can still add that drama, was the receiver able to catch the ball after such a hit. Is it a dropped pass? Is it a fumble? Shake the box and see how the dice roll!

But for now, it stands as a catch 1000% the way the rules are.

Peace

Default Question

What are the rules or guidelines for a fumble? With this hobby there should be a rule that governs fumbles. Because a type of touch is a tackle, how do you do a fumble?

If a touch ( how it is done in you're league ) is a tackle " Down by contact " then the play is over, the ball is dead ! There can be no fumble when there has been a tackle " Down by contact " .

However, care should be taken to make a fair rule that is on the same lines as football.

The ruling on the field by what the official see's is his call, the discretion of the official plays a part.

Jimbo:

1: Was it a catch ?
A: If yes then he would be down by contact.
B: If No ?
2: Fumble ? What is the procedures ?
3: On a simultaneous catch :
It is awarded to the offense and the play is dead " Down by contact "
