Are all bases created equal?
Hey guys, got a quick question, dont know if the answer will be quick or not though. My question is, when you get a set of bases, and you go to tweak them... can all bases be tweaked equally? Or at least to a certain degree of others? or are some bases a lost cause and will never perform that well?
wasn't sure if tweaking was all about the tweaker, or if individual bases had to be of good quality too. |

Relative To Each Tweaker
Good topic! IMHO I would say that each different type of base, or maybe different bases within the same bunch can be viewed as rookie athletes from different colleges. Some have outstanding speed, others strength and others a decent combination. Some bases out of the bag are gems, while duds can be turned into diamonds.
So to answer your question, almost every base can be coached. It just depends on if YOU can coach THAT base!?! Everyone gets caught up on making EVERY base a HULK. How well do they play together? How well would they play if they weren't bunched together? What if they had to play with TTC base-width gaps? Then what? Would they "scrum" down the field if they had to play 1 on 1 with their counterparts? Can they block their guy AND pickup the LBs shooting the gaps? Maybe. Maybe not. THAT'S FOOTBALL! THAT'S why they play the game. Strongest Man means squat. Larry Allen can Bench Press 250lbs 50-something times and IS the NFL's Strongest Man hands down. How did his TEAM do last season? Makes ya go hmmmmmmmmm, doesn't it? Same holds true for the lil plastic guys. Look at Michigan vs. Appalachian State (Sorry Joe!). A balanced and well-coached team trumps size, strength and arrogance ALL DAY LONG!!! Last edited by JIMBO : 02-10-2008 at 02:25 PM. |

I think it was Mike Pratt who once said, "There are no bad bases, just bad tweakers." That being said, I would like to put up a case that sometimes there are defective bases where the plastic didn't get to all the prongs correctly. In those cases, I'ld have to say that there are times when you'll get a bad base. Not that the base is totally useless, you just need to find something for that base to do within it's limits.

Everyone has an opinion
and are definitely entitled to it. I for one, don't think any base is bad. I come from the school of Sanford and Son. To one person, it may look like junk but trust me, you can probably find a use for that base or parts of that base in another capacity.
Sometimes, you can simply cut the prongs out and Frankenstein a new base which could be super. I've done that so often, words can not fathom it. So that adage that you heard Ravenna Al, I totally disagree with that! Be creative, innovative and ingenuous to your approach to miniature football. Reg |

can i add this question......?
dont know if this breaks away from the topic or helps the topic, but.......
when we speak on tweaking, arent there two thoughts on tweaking?, meaning: 1. Tweaking for a league, where you want top performance from each player with different characteristics as well as defined roles for each player? (player ofcourse being the base) 2. Tweaking for a solitaire league, where you might just want the guys to run straight first, then kinda work on a few specialty players? i say this cause when i think of gearing up a team for a tourney, i am thinking of positions, what i want and who i want. i will tweak accordingly. much bigger job because you are doing individual guys - and a lot of them. solitaire leagues, I ASSUME, one doesnt have enough time to perfectly tweak individuals on the many teams, so you rather settle somewhat, for just going straight, adequate speed and adequate strength. should you come across an extraordinary base during that tweak, that base immediately gets drafted to a tournament team. am i off here? not really sure. |

SOLITAIRE vs. TOURNEY
RR: I don't read or write between the lines anymore. It gave me migraines and made me quite grumpy. "In 2008, I'm reading and writing it straight!"
Hoop: You're right that Tourney teams have to have INDIVIDUAL players working together as a team, and Solitaire teams just have to be functional. That's how my ARENA League was. I based up my 6 teams, played a few games and slowly but surely as the "season" progressed each player turned into a killer. But that was 6 teams of 9 guys each (QBs were on dead bases, so they didn't count!) That wasn't too hard a task. Pro or College Solitaire Leagues would be tougher depending on your roster limit. Dawg: the only difference between the two is you can't flip your guys backwards on the single clips like you can the double clips. This is done quite often when equipment is limited to non-custom figures i.e. WRs that ALWAYS get hooked. |

I disagree
Quote:
It is always up to each coach to do what he sees fit, but I beleive that you build each team with it's own players charateristics that make that team more than just a easy tweak. I build all my teams with "playing for a championship" type tweaks all the time. It leans itself to always developing teams that can compete with anyone at anytime. Also, make for a better solitaire game where both teams have plays, stars, go-to guys, etc. I use the solitaire work to (1) develop the chemistry of each team; (2) find the weak players on each and get a replacement at the next tweak session. I guess when my friends come over to get some "work in" with my teams, they can just grab one off the shelf and begin to play. |
