Default 5-13 How Do We Bring The War Figure Painting Techniques To Mf

I believe in getting info straight from a good source, no disrespect to any of the new breed of customizers you guys are all A Double Meat Turkey Sandwich with chips and a soda (meaning extremely good at what you do) but 5-13 his abilty to go further with realism is jaw dropping, Brother 5-13 ask anyone who knows me I do my homework on this hobby. I remember you responding to one of my posts and you said that you were a war gaming figure painter, and I know what skills those hobbyists use to do what they do, how do WE use those painting skills in what we do

Alot of those wargame figures have much more intricate detail than the MF figures do. I think that makes it easier to figure out where to paint and what shade to use. Example, MF figures usually don't have a face, just a blank hunk of plastic there. If you want a face, you have to make it up yourself. War figures will have eyes, nose, chin, cheeks, mouth with lips etc. That makes it not only easier, but by nature ends up better looking in the end as well. But if you really want to, you can use war skills for MF without the extra detail. You just need to use more imagination, that's all

what al says is very true. painting in a wargaming style really requires a lot of detail from wrinkles in clothing, to muscle tone to faces. you need those "peaks and valleys" in the sculpts to be able to add shadows and highlites for a more dynamic paintjob. so far, the only stock figures that i have personally seen with enough detail to achieve these paintjobs are excalibur figures and dj's running back, and even the excalibur figures just barely have the detail. there are certain things that can be done to stock figures to give them a little extra flare, if this is what you are after. example, paint the mesh portions of the jersey a slightly darker tone than the rest of the jersey, or, if you are feeling brave, paint in the muscle tone on the arms and legs by using a darker version of your base color for the shadows and a lighter version of the same color for the highlites. i do this for all of my figures that i paint, i just don't feel like sculpting in all of that muscle tone. perhaps i can post something on the last 2 suggestions later showing some examples on how to add some depth in stock figures with the use of paint.

Biglock my friend..long time no speak....I painted up one of the new jennings figures using the warhammers style painting and it came out awsome. if i ever get a good camera i will take some pics. i have tried on other figs from other companys but without the details in the figure they never turn out right..they lack the POP that makes them stand out. you can still use some techniqs from the style like drybruching to get some cool effects but the overall details get lost.

here are a couple of old, stock buckeyes that i painted a while ago. the white jersey shows a seperation of color where the mesh of a jersey would normally be. i simply blocked in grey in that area and dry brushed white over top. the dark jersey shows that the pants have had a wash of brown over the grey and a dry brush of white to achieve the depth and the proper color for the bucks pants. the saints are all custom, complete with washes and dry brushed highlites. this should show the dynamic difference between painting with this particular style on less detail vs. more detail. some cool results can be reached with stock figures, but my preference will always be details, details, details!
