Thumbs up 1st year!

I'll be starting my first year of solitaire play in a few weeks. It will be an 8 team league with 2 divisions. The teams will be 22 man squads (Tudor/Miggle) and some of my all time favorites:

'89 49ers
'85 Bears
'86 Giants
'72 Dolphins
'02 Bucs
'79 Rams
'75 Raiders
'87 Redskins

I'll keep you all posted on games, rules (there will be some experimenting going on), etc. I'll also be asking for advice.

The bottom line will be for me to have fun!

Default Man!

After reading several threads in the solitaire section I've got to get me a snappy name and logo for my solitaire league.

Any ideas?

Default Great start!

My solitaire league got off to a great start this past week with two very competitive games:

'72 Dolphins 23
'75 Raiders 20

Miami's no name defense harassed Kenny "The Snake" Stabler all day (3 sacks) while using a balanced attack to top the Raiders in this game. The Fins speedy line backers kept Oakland's big play offense off balance the whole game. Clarence Davis was the only player who provided consistent offense during the day with 131 yards rushing and 2 TD's. Garo Yepremian even got into the act with a 63 yard FG to end the first half. Passing was atrocious by both teams (probably due to the fierce hitting going on).

'89 49ers 28
'79 Rams 27

The 49ers pull out a thrilling victory on the last play of the game to defeat the Rams in this one. This was certainly a tale of two halves as the Rams dominated the first half leading 27-7. They pounded the 49er defense with a bruising ground game and timely passing while shutting down San Francisco to little yardage. Montana and the boys got it cranked up in the second half maximizing the West Coast offense to the fullest. Joe survived a second half interception to hit 3 TD passes for the game. Rice had a total of 101 yards receiving for the game including the last play which was a 30 yard strike from Montana right into Rice's # 80 (I could not believe it myself) at the 5 yard line. Rice squeaked by the corner and safety barely crossing the goal line to cap a ferocious comeback.

I did not think solitaire could be this much fun. Still trying to come up with a league moniker and logo. I'm kickin' around using the "Motor City Solitaire Miniature Football League" or "MCSMFL" for short. Now if only I can talk the ever talented Weirdwolf to assist with a logo.

Typical Dolphin-Raiders game from those days, close and in the 20s.

Regular fare between the 49ers and Rams, too. ... Rams get close, but can't win.

Keep up the reporting on this.

Default Catching up

After a few weeks break the MCMFL finally resumed play to finish it's 1st week and start it's second. The results:

Bucs 30 - Giants 28

The Giants were favored going in but the Bucs had their owns plans. Their offense ripped the vaunted Giant defense with Brad Johnson passing for 131 yds and a TD, Alstott rushed for 125 yds and a TD while Pittman added 55 yds and 2 TD's. The Bucs led 17-7 at the half shutting down Phil Simms and Co. The second half saw both offenses light it up as Simms ended up with 2 TD's passing and Joe Morris finished up with 142 yds rushing and a couple of TD's. The Giants defense will be getting extra practice time before their next game agains the Rams.

Bears 35 Redskins 28

This was a closely fought contest with the Bears running game dominating until the end. Payton rushed for 147 yards and a TD while Matt Suhey romped for 112 yds and 2 TD's. The Skins did not disappoint running the ball as Timmy Smith blasted through the Bear 46 defense for 213 yds and 3 TD's. Unfortunately, he had little help as George Rogers was stuffed for only 20 yds and Dough Williams went 2 of 5 for 32 yards. Williams did help the cause with a long 51 yd TD run. Both defenses will have to tighten up if they expect any post season play.

Note: As this is my first solitaire season I'm still tweaking rules and game play. I've reduced the quarters from 15 to 12 plays and I only kickoff to start each half to cut down on time. I've also incorporated the chart used by the DFW league where they use "The Box". I've modified it for my league and find that it adds a bit of the unknown and excitement. I use it in the next game.

Redskins 21 Bucs 14

This was a defensive game sprinkled with a few big plays. Brad Johnson was 4 of 10, sacked twice and threw 2 picks while Doug Williams was 4 of 11, sacked once and was harrassed all day. Tim Smith was able to pound out 98 yards (58 on 1 play) and 2 TD's and Williams hit George Rogers on a 73 yard screen pass. The Bucs J & J clicked only once as Brad Johnson hit Keysawn "Throw me the ******** ball" Johnson on a 38 yd bomb down the side line. They also got a 90 yd punt return by Ronde Barber. The Bucs trailing by a touch down fought to the end as Johnson hit Pittman, who was surrounded by 3 defenders, with a pass at the 10 and was gang tackled on the 5 yd line on the games final play. The chart was not a factor in this hard hittng contest.

Next: '86 Bears vs. '72 Dolphins

Default Next Season!

I'll have the Lions next season. Don't know what year team I'll go with but I loved Barry Sanders so I may go with the '91 team. Won't rule out the '55 team though.

As you see I have an 8 team league. They will play each other once so I'm looking at a 7 game season (per team) and a championship game.

Keep us posted if you start a solitaire league.
